Orthodontics Q&A

What is orthodontics?

Orthodontics brighten your smile, enhance your appearance, and improve the function of your mouth. Many people think of orthodontics as a cosmetic option. The truth is, orthodontics boosts your oral health. Crooked or misaligned teeth can lead to dental problems later on. If you have spacing issues, food and plaque can become trapped within hidden crevices. Over time, you may be at a higher risk for tooth decay.

Jaw misalignments can also result in uneven wear-and-tear. Patients with bite problems often develop chipped teeth or jaw pain. These orthodontic issues can also interfere with your speech or eating. Fortunately, treatment can help.

Orthodontic care works to realign your teeth and jaw. The result is a healthier mouth and a straighter smile.

Dr. Sheets offers in-house orthodontics. He uses SureSmile clear aligners to straighten teeth without clunky braces.

What are the available orthodontic options?

Orthodontic treatments can include:

  • Braces
  • Archwires
  • Retainers
  • Elastics
  • Clear aligners

Clear aligners have become a popular orthodontic treatment for both adults and teens. These custom-made appliances are fully removable, and they're a discreet acrylic. Unlike traditional braces, aligners aren't visible to your friends and coworkers. There are no brightly colored elastics or sharp wires. As a result, many patients find clear aligners more comfortable than braces.

When the clear aligners are in place, they fit snugly into your mouth and guide teeth into alignment. It's important to keep your aligners in place for at least 20-22 hours per day. However, patients can remove their aligners for meals and oral care. Dr. Sheets can provide more information about aligners during your consultation.

What should I expect from my orthodontic consultation?

During your consultation, Dr. Sheets takes 3D X-rays to capture detailed images of your mouth. Next, he uses SureSmile computer-generated software. SureSmile software helps determine how your aligners should look. The software can also help you visualize your treatment results.

As part of your consultation, Dr. Sheets explains your treatment timeline. He also lets you know how often you must wear your aligners and how often to change them. Patients generally switch out their aligners every two weeks. Each new set of aligners guides your teeth toward the perfect smile.

After treatment is complete, you may need a retainer to preserve your results. Retainers are generally worn only at night, but in some cases, you may receive a permanent retainer. A permanent or fixed retainer uses a thin strip of wire that's glued to the back of your teeth.
